Walmart Drainage by Michael Nath

August 2020 - Walmart Drainage

About the Image(s)

Attached is my photo for August. It is an infrared image of a holding pond for excess water during the spring thaw of the snow in the local mountains prior to its flow into the Logan river in Cache Valley Utah. The location is next to the WalMart parking lot in Logan, Utah.

I use a converted Pentax K10 with a 720nm filter, 1/60s, f13, ISO 100, at 36mm with an 18-55mm lens. Processed in photoshop with conversion using the black & white adjustment followed by NIK silver effects pro.

Michael - a lot going on in this image - it's rather busy, but the positioning of the tree in the centre works well. Overall a limited tonal range - maybe a touch more contrast?

I would consider reducing the brightness of the white cloud at the top of the image or cloning it out - it does tend to draw the eye.   Posted: 08/10/2020 10:15:28

Hi Michael
I have become a great admirer of your work but sadly this one is not having an immediate impact on me I find it a little dark and the tree which is the focal point gives me an impression of blocking my view of something behind as Peter said I also find it a little busy, sorry for the negativity I do like the sky and if and I do not know the location if the tree could have been more to the left with a view into the distance this may have been more pleasing.   Posted: 08/13/2020 14:54:37

No need to apologize Ian, I prefer an honest evaluation ever anything else. I was trying to work with how the light was so variable in the grass and the few leaves that were present. Obviously it didn't work out. Maybe I'll try again with B&W film and scan the negative instead of infrared. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Thanks for the honest evaluation, I appreciate it.   Posted: 08/14/2020 12:59:08

As Peter has commented, this is a busy image.
However it is an interesting rendition of an unpromising mega and I quite like the result.   Posted: 08/14/2020 16:24:13

Hi Michael: I like your composition very much! The center dark tree, to my eye, seems to be the focal point of your composition and, like the reflections as well. As others have pointed out, and, I agree, to either darken that white cloud in the center or, if possible clone it out.   Posted: 08/14/2020 17:35:49

Thank you John and Ella. I appreciate it.   Posted: 08/15/2020 09:16:12

Hi Michael. I enjoy seeing your infra red efforts. I agree about the white cloud tending to draw the eye to itself. Overall the image is a little dark for me. I wonder what would happen if you played with contrast areas. I look forward to seeing more infrared images. I would like to try this technique myself.   Posted: 08/17/2020 11:23:13

Thanks you for the compliment Ed. Adjusting the contrast with infra red, for me at least, is trickier than with traditional black and white. More control of tones is available with the color sliders (similar to converting a color image with the black & white adjustment layer in Photoshop). It has something to do with how the RAW file is stored with a converted camera like the one I use.   Posted: 08/17/2020 20:35:59

Michael I have to agree with Peter and Ian there is a lot going on here. I am not sure how to resolve the concerns.   Posted: 08/22/2020 13:11:45
