Cotton Ball Basin by Ella Schreiber, QPSA, APSA

June 2020 - Cotton Ball Basin

About the Image(s)

This image was shot at Cotton-Ball Basin this past January while on a workshop in Death Valley. While it appears to be snow and ice, it actually is salt. FF camera w/17-40 lens @ 27 mm, 1sec exposure, (on a tripod of course) F-stop at 20, ISO 100. I converted it to B/W using NIK, did some selective dodging and burning, added a curves adjustment, sharpened the image, added a slight vignette and a 3 pix grey INSIDE stroke, and, called it done

Ella - an area of Death Valley that I have not visited and your image highlights the barren nature of Cotton Ball Basin.I like the inclusion of the foreground grasses which provide a good base and beyond that the dark streaks in the salt which lead the eye to the distant mountains.

It's a very open image with no real focal point apart from the mountains where the application of a masked CEP 4 Detail Extractor layer might give the image a boost.   Posted: 06/06/2020 03:31:00

Very well done Ella. For me the view of the salt pan in the foreground is the highlight of this image. The mountains and sky are a natural stopping point for the eye and cause me to look down and re-examine the foreground where all the detail is concentrated. I guess I am at an advantage since I live next to the salt flats of northern Utah and have a similar view. For me, no changes are needed.   Posted: 06/09/2020 12:33:54

Ella although its been many years since I explored Death Valley its starkness and quiet was a constant allure to me. I visited and spend many days there over a number of years. That being said i appreciate the capture of the starkness and desolation of the valley. The image seems to me, a bit over sharp in the foreground. But that is the nature of Death Valley, extreme contrasts. Nice image.   Posted: 06/09/2020 15:34:37

Ella, what an excellent landscape.

I find this to be an immersive image in that I like to wander through to see what little details I can find.

Great stuff!   Posted: 06/09/2020 17:18:21

John, thank you for your comments... Death Valley has many, many vast landscapes... and, Cotton-Ball basin was a new stop for me... Just visible on the tops of the mountains is light from sun rise... which was pretty nice.   Posted: 06/09/2020 18:42:01

Ella you have handled the image very well. I have no suggestions on how to improve it. Peter's comment regarding the lack of a focal point, is somewhat valid. However, that is the nature of the area you photographed....open and baren.

HI Paul... thank you for your feedback. I've visited Death Valley several times in the past, however, Cotton-Ball basin was a new location this last visit... and, would recommend anyone going there to make a stop... lots of possibilities for photos.   Posted: 06/12/2020 16:26:23

Hi Ella
My word you get around,I have never visited death valley but watched many documentaries of the area and you have captured the bleakness and isolation of the area really well, great lead in and fantastic swirls and curves in the foreground to draw the eye in great textures in the mountains and perfectly cropped.   Posted: 06/16/2020 15:13:37
