May 2020 - Flowers on Box

About the Image(s)

May seems like a good month for flowers… and, I think we need some in our lives right about now. This still life was taken with window light only… A FF camera, 24-105 lens, F 5.6, 0.6 sec exposure, ISO 200. In post camera processing, I converted it to mono with NIK, sharpened the image, selectively dodged and burned some areas, put a vignette, and a 2 pix grey stroke and called it done.

Hi Ella - another well composed and lit still life! I think the image would benefit from relieving the blacks of the central flowers to give a hint of detail in those areas.   Posted: 05/08/2020 04:41:20

A very interesting still life image Ella. As Peter pointed out you could impove the image by opening the shadows.   Posted: 05/08/2020 15:57:59

I am in awe of your ability to produce wonderful still life images.
I could not come up with a picture like this in years of trying.

The image is wonderful.   Posted: 05/11/2020 04:11:51

John - thank you for your very nice comments... these still life images are relatively new endeavors and trials since being home give me LOTS of time to practice... stay tuned   Posted: 05/11/2020 06:51:20

Ella you are creating wonderful still life images. You seem to have a skill at selecting components and textures that work well together. Deciding on what components to use in a still life has always been very challenging for me. Nicely done.   Posted: 05/11/2020 12:21:56

Ed thank you for your feedback and nice comments...for me creating a still life is, in many ways, more difficult than shooting landscapes... BUT... either you are a fan of still life or you're not... It seems from the comments and feedback received... it is clear which camp is sending smoke signals.   Posted: 05/13/2020 06:53:08

Ella, your produce really thoughtful and interesting still life images. This one with a scarf, flowers, and box. This one draws my eye from the top with the scarf down and around the flowers to the box and back up to the flowers. The darkness of the leaves provides good contrast to the scarf and the flowers. I made a print before disagreeing with Peter and Paul as I thought that the blacks would reveal more texture and detail than we can see with our monitors and it does. I made no adjustments except to image size and resolution and printed it on luster paper with my Epson printer. I can see the veins in the shadows of the large flat leaves in the print whereas the same area on my monitor is just a flat black with no detail. Well Done!   Posted: 05/17/2020 22:11:22

Michael thank you for your very nice comments. This image did well in competition both BW & color.... so, I guess the judges are in agreement with your assessment. Thanks again.   Posted: 05/18/2020 05:26:09

Hi Ella
I send my best wishes for your health and safety.
I think you have found your niche but knowing you you will take up another genre of photography and master that.
I think the hardest part of any still life is the composition and you have so mastered that, the the lighting, tonal range and composition are exquisite well done Ella
Take care   Posted: 05/18/2020 14:47:20
