December 2019 - Passing By

About the Image(s)

Original color image made with a canon EOS-1Ds Mark III, Lens 24-70 mm at 46mm. Two images were combined. The camera was not moved. The first image had no girl. The second Image contained the girl. The two were combined and the image with the girl was made transparent to give her a ghost look. The combined image was cropped, burned and dodged, the JPEG was sharpened with a high pass filter. My intent was to depict the passage of time.

Ed - an interesting approach to depicting the passage of time - clearly a lot of thought went into this image and you opted for a combination image rather than a slow shutter speed. The image works for me up to a point - the translucent as opposed to blurred legs do not sit comfortably with the sharp upper body - I think this should have been made partially translucent too to add to the feeling of movement. Composition is good with the street on the diagonal and the texture of the wet paved road and the reflections are great.   Posted: 12/16/2019 08:05:58

Very interesting image Ed. I have been back a few times to look at your image. I feel that Peter's comment about the slow shutter speed, would perhaps have been a better approach....not sure, however. Technically your image is very well done.   Posted: 12/18/2019 09:24:19

An excellent idea and well executed.
The legs do not bother me unduly, they would always be moving faster than the body.   Posted: 12/22/2019 05:19:48

HI Ed: An interesting approach to making a ghost... To my eye, half of her is ghosted - her legs.. and the rest appears intact - or not ghosted. As they say, nothing beats a great pair of legs...I think I'd decide if I wanted her totally visible, or ghosted. If ghosted is what your are after, then I'd consider decreasing the opacity on the second image to make her whole self more ghosted … which might sound weird... hopefully, you can decipher what I mean.   Posted: 12/22/2019 17:04:50

I understand and I will try that to get more of the effect I was after.   Posted: 12/22/2019 21:11:26

Hi Ed
As already said great idea and very well executed composition is very good love the wet cobbles my only suggestion I might just bring the highlights down a touch as I find them a little bright but well thought out and well executed.
Very best wishes for Christmas and a peaceful New Year
