About the Image(s)

This image was shot at the Palouse in the State of Washington in the USA. An area of fertile farm-land which specializes in growing wheat. I attended the PSA conference in Spokane, and, one workshop was to this area. I used an IR camera (borrowed from our photographer guide) on a tripod, 1/60, F8, ISO 320. We were lucky to have beautiful clouds. Post camera processing was a bit challenging since I have never before processed IR… so, be kind… this is my first attempt.

Ella - congratulations on your first infrared image! Not a lot wrong with your processing and the image holds together well with the dominant ploughed area just off centre. Good tonal range although one or two shadow areas are a little blocked up and I find what I assume to be a jet trail very distracting.

I took the liberty of further post processing - image cropped to 16x9, some clouds at the top of the frame cloned out along with the jet trail. Applied highlights/shadows on a masked layer to relieve the v. dark shadow areas. Just my take on your image!   Posted: 11/11/2019 08:22:55

Peter: Thank you... an improvement... the borrowed camera had such a dirty sensor … there were spots all over, which I had to deal with in post. I'll apply your suggestions. Thanks again.   Posted: 11/11/2019 17:19:55

For a first stab at IR this is very good indeed.
I would agree with Peter's comments except that I reckon the 'jet trail' is actually a lenticular cloud! But I could be incorrect........

John... thanks for your feedback... and, learned the difference between jet trails and lenticular clouds... Who knew? I am glad you clarified that for us.   Posted: 11/12/2019 06:25:14

Hello Ella. Although I have no experience with infrared I would say your image is a success. I like Peter's 16x9 format
and the reduction in the clouds. I tend to agree with John regarding the lenticular cloud but I am not a weather forecaster. Are you interested in further infrared attempts? I am contemplating having an older canon converted.   Posted: 11/16/2019 15:39:22
