The Slide by Ed Ries

March 2019 - The Slide

About the Image(s)

Canon EOS5Ds, 70 to 2000mm lens set to 200 mm. F22 at 1/80, ISO 400 . I was attracted to the contrast of the obviously little used slide when painted in sunlight from a break in the clouds on an otherwise dreary day. I tend to like moody dramatic images. There seemed to be some sadness about the subject at having been abandoned for so long from the laughter of children. Original color was cropped to place slide more in lower third and left third. CEP used to add dynamic contrast and detail enhancer. Converted to monochrome in NIK with an applied red filter to darken foliage. Finally the reduced image was sharpened with a high pass filter.

Ed - I'm in two minds with this image - I see where you are coming from in terms of your interpretation of the story behind the image, but find that it is not very strong pictorially. This could be due to the tightish crop and possibly landscape format would be more suitable and emphasize the loneliness of the slide in the landscape.   Posted: 03/13/2019 06:15:24

HI Ed: I can see that slide crying for a child's attention along with the overgrowth of weeds and vegetation surrounding the landscape. How sad. But, in the slide's youth it must have been loved by many as it looks like it has signs of good use in the past. You've got a good eye to see something like this. Compositionally, the vegetation on the right hand side seems to compete for my attention. I might consider a tighter crop to focus more on the side.   Posted: 03/13/2019 08:55:14

Hi, Ed!

Agree with Peter comment.

IMHO. For main idea of "sadness about the subject at having been abandoned for so long from the laughter of children" i need something more. May be worthwhile to change the image point of shoot and angle and include some additional subdominant objects in the frame to recreate the main idea of the image.   Posted: 03/14/2019 02:53:56

For me the picture tells the story very well.

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. An interesting variety of perspectives. I will consider them all as I decide what to do with the image. And the learning continues...   Posted: 03/16/2019 15:07:27

Hi Ed, I sense the sadness when I look at your image and read your comments. Peter's comment, in my opinion about the image not being very strong pictorially is appropriate. That been said I am not sure how to offset it. Perhaps and old discarded toy nearby?   Posted: 03/19/2019 01:24:13
