Petersburg House by Ella Schreiber, QPSA, APSA

October 2018 - Petersburg House

About the Image(s)

This was taken in Petersburg Alaska this past July. Petersburg is a city in Alaska only accessible by boat or air plane and whose primary industry is fishing. Some homes are located along this canal and was an area that just called out to me. I found the scenery very interesting and typical of the area. A CS camera with a 18-400 lens, shot at 110 mm, !/250,F8.ISO 400… hand held. In post camera processing, I converted the image to BW using NIK, sharpened it a bit, selectively dodged and burned some areas, put a couple smudge lines in the water, added a stroke and called it done.

Thanks John… I am going to receive my “A” in Salt Lake… and, that is my motivation for attending… additionally, I will be presenting the Photo Book Essay contest… which I was the director for this year… should be fun.

Thanks again for all of your work.

Ella - I do enjoy images of old weathered timber buildings and this is no exception. It reminds me very much of the Moulton Ranch Barn in the Grand Tetons which I am sure you are familiar with - the shape is almost identical.

I love the contrasting textures in the background and the weathered timber - the reflection is a great bonus and the o'all quality first class.

My only gripe is that the crop is rather tight and a little more space on both sides could be beneficial as would be the inclusion of the apex of the roof of the RH building.Nevertheless very well done!

Peter thank you for your nice comments... I wanted the building with the Moulton barn type roof to be center stage and was afraid if I backed out too much the "cabin" on the right would have taken way from the image.   Posted: 10/11/2018 15:52:20

I love the main barn and the reflection.
Not an easy image to compose so you have done very well.   Posted: 10/14/2018 07:40:46

Hi John: Thank you for your feedback... you are exactly right... often we want more information in an image, BUT.. the reality of the actual place and space constraints will dictate what is possible for a composition.   Posted: 10/15/2018 19:54:58

Hi Ella, I very much like your image. I agree with Peter's comments for the most part. I am not sure if a wider crop on the left side would enhance the image. I do agree with your comment about the building on the right side. I feel you have just enough there presently. I suppose the only way is to create a second image with a wider crop to the left and compare?   Posted: 10/14/2018 10:45:01

Hi, Ella!

Many congratulations on the award of APSA!!!

I agree with the previous comments. In my opinion very sharp. But I like the shot. Peter is well noticed - "a little more space on both sides could be beneficial".   Posted: 10/15/2018 03:30:32
