Godafoss in Winter by Peter Clark, APSA, GMPSA, EFIAP/p, FRPS

April 2018 - Godafoss in Winter

About the Image(s)

My prime objective in returning to NE Iceland this past winter (previously visited in July 2016) was to see and photograph the major waterfalls of Godafoss, Dettifoss and Selfoss in a semi frozen state. Unfortunately the road to the latter two falls was blocked with snow, but the road to Godafoss was clear.

This image was captured on a Panasonic Lumix GX8 fitted with the Lumix 12-35mm f2.8 lens set at 13mm (35mm equivalent 26mm), 1/60 sec, f5.6, +1 stops exposure compensation, ISO 200.

Initially processed in colour with CEP4 Detail Extractor, several masked Curves layers (all in Luminosity mode as usual to eliminate any colour shift), a masked Vibrance layer and a touch of CEP4 Tonal Contrast, also on a masked layer.

Converted to monochrome in SEP 2 and fine-tuned on three additional masked and unmasked Curves layers. The granular nature of the sky, resulting from some aggressive processing to reveal detail, was given a dose of noise reduction in NIK Define. As usual this jpeg was sharpened using the High Pass filter in Soft Light mode.

Hi Peter it is great to see Godafoss in the winter vs summer when I was there. Another fabulous winter scape image. How did you not kill yourself getting to the location to shoot this image with all of the snow and ice on the ground? Since visiting this area myself, I know how rough the surrounding terrain is in the summer... cannot imagine how you managed in to maneuver in the winter.   Posted: 04/06/2018 10:02:27

Safety is always of prime concern of course. We traveled in a Toyota 4WD minibus with studded tyres and never had a problem anywhere in the NW despite the snow and ice. For my part I wore grips (Yak Trax) on my boots all the time and never slipped.

As you have been to Godafoss in the summer - I am returning there at the end of June around the Summer Solstice - I have attached the colour version below ....

Hi Peter
This picture captures everything about the falls movement, tumult, frenzy, energy and above all it looks cold beyond imagination,it is so well composed almost in levels the sky down to the distant hills and in the foreground the main subject the way you have composed the arc of the falls leads eye around and through the picture so all parts of the image are taken in as Ella said another fabulous winter scape.   Posted: 04/13/2018 04:47:31

Hi Peter, I love the colour version. This is on of the few times I can honestly say that. The b/w image is very good, it in my opinion lacks something, not sure exactly what. The blue in the colour version does it for me.   Posted: 04/13/2018 07:21:51

Peter, an excellent landscape, as we have come to expect.
I cannot suggest how to improve this image.

Like Paul, I do prefer the colour version; perhaps the colours emphasise the coldness?   Posted: 04/19/2018 02:39:58

Hi, Peter!

A wonderful landscape. Very balanced. I prefer the color version of the picture.   Posted: 04/20/2018 02:36:12

Peter, both the color and B&W conversion images are pleasing. Like the others I think my preference is the color version. It seems to better relate the cold.   Posted: 04/24/2018 12:46:59
