April 2021 - Ferry Watching

About the Image(s)

A few days ago my daughter and I were enjoying some time at one of the waterfront parks in Tacoma. We had both brought our cameras as she wanted me to teach her some basics. Rebecca noticed the wire hanging on the driftwood stump. As it happened the local Washington State Ferry was at the dock. I thought it made a nice backdrop. This was handheld, f4.0 at 70mm on my 24-70. Other than a minimal crop, I haven't done anything to this image.

Good photo on several levels. Your composition brings back the time that was with current technology. Composition is very good, no distractions and color saturation on the foreground is lovely. Nice work.   Posted: 04/05/2021 19:02:42

Great photo, like that the background is not sharp.   Posted: 04/09/2021 10:57:06

The rope and wood is nice and sharp with good texture I think it is the center of attention and I would crop in tighter and blur the ferry more
Since you wanted more of the ferry as another choice I would crop out the red flag and sky and blur the ferry a little more   Posted: 04/09/2021 11:45:44

I think you are right, Judy, about cropping out most of the sky and removing the red flag (windsock). I was trying to keep the radio tower in the image, but realize now, it is better without it. I was uncertain about the red sock as well.

I open in jest -- all eyes are on the docking ferry, the passengers on the boat looking to those awaiting them, those on the wharf to long awaited passengers -- all except Dorinda and her granddaughter who are focused on a stump and the coil of wire! But, it is a nice photograph, sharply focused and evocative, raising questions about the focus of the offering. Any thoughts, Dorinda?   Posted: 04/09/2021 19:08:06

Jon, you got a chuckle out of me on that one! Isn't that what photographers do? Miss the obvious and settle on the mundane? If my image got you to create a story in your mind, then I think it was successful.

The ferry makes a nice backdrop. I like the contrast of textures here, with the wire on the tree and then the ferry behind. I also like how the wire is brighter than the tree, highlighting it even more. Was that by accident?   Posted: 04/14/2021 09:56:21

Thank you Jessica. As far as the wire, I did want it brighter and sharper than the tree. Thanks for noticing.
