Sunrise on a Calm Morning by Tom Carnahan

February 2021 - Sunrise on a Calm Morning

About the Image(s)

I thought a photo similar to the last months photo with a uncluttered and clean photo would take me to another level with comments and lessons. Appreciate all the help the group provides.
Data-1/800.f/11,23.4 mm, ISO 800. Minor cropping to remove the shore line, remove distractions in the sky crop the top to remove distracting clouds and did not have any birds in the photo. The aim was to have a very clean image with sharp ripples in the water and center on the sun and the reflections from the sun.

Very nice cloud formation and colors. The pattern in the waves also adds a lot. As with last month's image, I wish that the sun and its reflection were not so blown.   Posted: 02/07/2021 15:25:31

Tom, I like the colors and lighting better on this one than the one you submitted last month. Again, you have the sun just slightly off center, which is a good thing in my opinion. The horizon is level and in a good place in the image. But without something to look at ... a bird, a boat, a piece of driftwood... it just does not hold my attention.   Posted: 02/08/2021 17:27:17

Nicely done background image, Tom. As Dorinda has noted, it is a lovely background in search of a subject. (bring back the birds!)   Posted: 02/09/2021 09:32:03

Thanks and will try again next month with some variations.
Any techniques to answer the over blown comment. I have tried to reduce the exposure, whites, increase darkness in the surrounding areas with so-so results Looking forward to your help.   Posted: 02/09/2021 12:13:00

I'm not sure there is much you can do re the blown out areas. Sometimes it just is what it is. I don't actually see it as a problem in this image.   Posted: 02/09/2021 15:12:03

Beautiful sun flare I would crop in from right and try HDR to cut down blown out areas This is a good subject for HDR with in camera bracketing However sometimes Aurora HDR HDR Pro or Photomatix can do an HDR with one exposure
You could crop more from the bottom and add birds to use it as a background as Jon noted
I did this roughly using Aurora HDR and some old birds of mine which needed to be blacker and cut out more   Posted: 02/26/2021 17:32:22
