Cup of Coffee by Leonid Shectman

January 2021 - Cup of Coffee

About the Image(s)

I have been collecting a lot of different things. I am taking pictures everywhere and everything what I could see and use in future. The cup picture was taken in the restaurant where I had a lunch. So, the whole thing is completely from my imagination. It is done step by step, changing different items. It is done by method of trying. It was a lot of work

This made me look twice. The idea is fun. I'd like it more if it weren't coffee coming from a teapot, if the coffee-tea followed a realistic trajectory, if the light source were in the same place for the pot and the cup, and if the shadows were more consistent with what was casting them. Maybe all of these discrepancies are intentional, and the artistic intent is to build an image with many internal contradictions and make the viewer think?

First of all the shadows are in the same direction for both cup and the pot, they have a small difference in the angle but it is ok. The coffee coming from the Pot is realistic I checked it. But it is a fantasy and does not to be exact.   Posted: 01/02/2021 16:57:59

To me it would look more correct if the shadow of the pot's spout and shadow of the pot's handle were interchanged. It seems to me that the locations of the light sources illuminating the top inside of the coffee cup and the teapot are different. Also, in my experience liquid flowing out of a spout falls in a curved arc. I completely agree that it is a fantasy piece, and a very creative one. I like seeing the objects floating in space and the shards from something being broken, but the little deviations that I've mentioned subtract from my enjoyment of the creation.   Posted: 01/02/2021 20:20:09

No critique, just thanks for stretching your imagination and making me think. Look forward to more in the future.   Posted: 01/03/2021 14:53:55

I can imagine how much work this involved. It is much beyond my own abilities and I applaud how much work and imagination was involved. The image definitely drew my immediate attention. I like the fact that although different colors are present, each object is a solid color. I think if the cup, pot or table had a pattern, that would distract. After looking at it several times, I think I would like it better if the cup were a little smaller. It feels too big in relation to the coffee pot (I think it is a coffee pot not tea, due to it's shape) and the table.   Posted: 01/03/2021 17:26:53

Very creative composite. Nice and sharp.I agree with you that the items in a creative image are up to the creator   Posted: 01/08/2021 22:25:47

Robert, I rise to defend pots and pouring:
Tea pots are short and stout. Coffee pots are tall and stout. This is correctly a coffee pot. I looked it up with Google to verify.
Considering the rapid pouring rate and the short distance to fall, the slight arc of the coffee stream looks OK to me.

Leonid, this is quite impressive. Can you add the silver bullet that is shattering the coffee pot?   Posted: 01/08/2021 23:47:38

Interesting collection and skillfully put together from sharply photographed pieces. I am having some difficulty seeing the overall picture of what the composition is trying to tell me. What does the exploding coffee pot have to do with the "cup of coffee?"   Posted: 01/10/2021 09:00:36

I think it is just for fun. Leonid was letting his imagination fly! Great time to practice these things.

Thanks folks for informing me on coffee and tea pots. I stand corrected on this issue.   Posted: 01/10/2021 11:09:25

So creative! I would actually get rid of the table. I think it detracts from the image and have floating, exploding coffee pot and cup.   Posted: 01/12/2021 11:29:28

I hadn't thought of that Jessica, but it would make an interesting image.   Posted: 01/12/2021 20:04:16
