Holiday Cheer by Jon Joyce

January 2021 - Holiday Cheer

About the Image(s)

Inspired by Harold Davis (thanks to Judy Merson for making me aware of his work), I shot these stacked images in a lightbox, f/16, ISO 64, shutter speeds f1/8 to 30 seconds. Like all of us, I am scrounging around for subject matter while ducking the virus. I am just getting acquainted with this technique and this is among my first efforts. Flower subjects are a bit scarce this time of year, but I can see that the technique can be applied to a wide array of subject matter.

The light box technique gives great results. The red spheres and the green leaves appeal to me. Our own holly is a bit annoying as I had to look for a long time to find a branch with berries closer to the tip so that I didn't need to include so many leaves. That is, I'd like this better if there were fewer leaves. For the fun of it, try converting the white to black. My image of holly became nicer against a black background.   Posted: 01/02/2021 15:41:20

Placing the holly on black did enhance the colors. Thanks   Posted: 01/10/2021 09:03:15

It is nice picture, but it is very flat not alive for me.   Posted: 01/02/2021 17:10:05

Not familiar with the technique like the possibilities for future work. Minor item is the stem that could be cut to eliminate the small bit of bark.. A slight shadow if possible might give the photo depth but is dealers choice. Look forward to more photos.   Posted: 01/03/2021 14:35:37

This is very nicely placed, forming a pleasing composition. I would certainly use it on a holiday card or other decoration. If you like, you can add various backgrounds. Keep working with the light box.   Posted: 01/06/2021 20:28:23

Nice sharp capture of the holly. Lovely colors. I am glad my attempt at photographing flowers for transparency inspired you.
Harold Davis sometimes also photographs rice paper or other textures to make a composite background I agree with Dorinda that such a background would enhance this image I scanned in such backgrounds and tried this but I am using my iPad due to a desktop problem and do not have that image right now   Posted: 01/08/2021 22:52:58

Great sharp image. I think using a light box is great. I like the white background. I think black would not scream Christmas. I would suggest cropping some of the background out. Not necessarily coping the holly itself, but just some of the background.   Posted: 01/12/2021 11:24:37
