Sunflower and Friends by Jessica Manelis

October 2020 - Sunflower and Friends

About the Image(s)

I shot this recently at a local Sunflower farm I went to with my daughter. I shot it with my cell phone, but I used Photoshop to do some sharpening and adjustments. It was over cast so the sky was grey and I didn't really want to show a lot of sky. Looking forward to your thoughts.

My visit to a local sunflower farm this year was a little disappointing, so I'm happy to see your image. It is very well done. I like the processing you used. You mentioned the sky. I think you could successfully crop a little more. Also, I used a radial filter to increase the brightness of the inside of the sunflower. Just a thought. Thanks for sharing this lovely image.

I'll try lighting up the middle.   Posted: 10/12/2020 10:48:59

This is very pleasant and uplifting. I would have liked this more if the horizon didn't just graze the top edge of the lower. Dorinda's crop helps, but to me doesn't fully overcome this problem.   Posted: 10/11/2020 19:28:14

Thanks for your thoughts Robert. I see what you are saying. It's a short person's problem :)   Posted: 10/12/2020 10:49:52

Nice image, Jessica! I particularly liked the nice sharply focused bud below the subject. I also liked Dorinda's suggested brightening the center of the flower which gives it a more balanced look to me. And the title is great! (Could have been "Mother and Child.")   Posted: 10/12/2020 11:27:17

Beautiful sharp capture of the sunflower and left bud I like the texture of the bud Perhaps a new sky in Luminar 4 ( done better than I did mine) or select top of flower and clone in more field to eliminate the sky altogether
I tried to do it in Touch retouch on the I pad PSCC would do clone better   Posted: 10/12/2020 15:24:15
