A Quiet Place by Dorinda Wills

October 2020 - A Quiet Place

About the Image(s)

Taken near Eden, UT, two years ago. We spent several days exploring northern UT prior to the PSA conference in Salt Lake City. These are aspen leaves, taken with my 70-200mm at 82mm, f2.8, probably hand held. I wanted a soft, dreamy look. Using Topaz, I tried to keep the central leaves sharp while adding a blur to the remaining leaves. Recently I started using the vignette tool in Topaz which I like very much. You can easily move a sort of "spotlight" around to the area you want to emphasize. The vignette will be outside that area, not just around the edges. Very easy to use.

I love the yellows and greens and that my attention is directed to the center by the sharpness in the center. I would like the image a little more if the center didn't appear quite so bright.   Posted: 10/04/2020 05:36:26

Nice dreamy feeling. I thought a first glance that I was looking a growth in an aquarium with the leaves seeming to float. I agree with Robert that the brightness at the center is a little too much and might be toned down. But, perhaps it is that blurred brightness (from light on the other side of the aquarium) that provides that dreamy feeling?   Posted: 10/08/2020 15:13:44

I'll try to tone it down.

You absolutely accomplished your goal of dreamy! I like how you have a few leaves more in focus and I am not sure if you enhanced the color a bit, but I like it. To Robert's point, it does appear that the background light seems a little blown out.   Posted: 10/12/2020 10:40:14

I agree I get the feeling of dreaminess and contrast with the sharp anterior leaves You could decrease the brightness in the background with Nik Collection Viveza 2 just in brighter areas of background   Posted: 10/12/2020 15:49:56
