Dahlia Garden by Dorinda Wills

September 2020 - Dahlia Garden

About the Image(s)

Another flower image. Sorry. A friend and I went to a local public garden where the dahlias were in full bloom. We got there around 6pm. This was taken with my 105mm macro using my Nikon Z6 mirrorless. To use the 105 on this camera I have to use an adapter but I have found it works quite well and I love using the Z6. Taken using a tripod, F20, ISO 1250 as we were losing the sun at that time. I made only a small crop, used AI sharpen in Topaz and a couple of minor other adjustments. Finally, I placed a slight vignette using Topaz vignette filter. The T. vignette filter is something that I just discovered and that I think I will be using a lot. It allows me to sort of spotlight the area I want to hilite, not just darken the edges. This was my first photo trip "out" all year. There were a lot of people in the garden, but with masks and distancing, I think it was ok. If people approached where I was shooting, I Just moved on.

What fantastic colors. I also like the inclusion of the background that shows the context.   Posted: 09/02/2020 15:09:59

Thank you Robert. I was trying to include some background to tell the story of being in the garden, enjoying the flowers rather than just a photo of a flower.

Lovely flower colors Sharp, but could be sharper Focus stacking would work here I felt that image had been turned That added some tension to the image. However I turned it cropped a bit more cloned out the yellow in the petals which while natural I felt detracted and blurred the background more I also used Topaz sharpen AI again   Posted: 09/04/2020 20:24:29

Judy's version is very nice also.
I've taken so darned many flowers the past four months that I'm happy to see something a little different, and Dorinda's sideways orientation provided what I was looking for. I don't know which of the two I prefer. Novelty was also the motivation for my intergalactic shot.   Posted: 09/05/2020 16:30:05

The image I submitted is shown as taken, with the dahlia facing left. I do like Judy's version also, although not necessarily better. I think Judy's version makes me think of a water lily rather than the dahlia that it is.

Very elegant photo with great colors , not distractions and our of focus background. The two gold or reddish orange splashes in the middle of the bloom are a nice touch.   Posted: 09/16/2020 12:57:54

Thank you Tom. The gold splashes are native to the flower and I agree, add considerably to the image.

I think it is a beautiful capture. I like the colors and the petals are in focus. I don't agree with rotating it. I strongly feel if you are capturing flowers as the grow then they should be presented as they grow.   Posted: 09/17/2020 11:04:17
