Staple City by Dorinda Wills, APSA, QPSA

May 2020 - Staple City

About the Image(s)

Like many others, I've been perusing the internet for ideas and inspiration. I've seen several examples of photographing cities made of staples and screws. This is one from my first attempt. I placed the items on a mirror with a black mat behind it. Soft daylight through the window. Using my new Nikon Z6 mirrorless (loving it!). Converted to bw. This is just a start as I will try again with more complex scenes.

What a novel idea. Here's a thought for an addition..put a tiny toy car on the street, silver would be perfect, but white could probably work well.
I said this in an earlier comment in another group, I never cease to be amazed at the imagination in the digital dialogue groups. Well done!   Posted: 05/03/2020 08:16:04

Thank you Beverly. As I mentioned, I got the idea from other posts I have see on the internet. Since this image, I have been playing with the idea even more. I like your idea of the tiny silver car.   Posted: 05/03/2020 12:14:06

I like the lighting and that it is B&W. I would like it better if the arrangement of the buildings were more similar to those of an actual city, and if the screws and bolt, which do not look like buildings, were not present.   Posted: 05/04/2020 18:06:59

I probably should not refer to this one as a city, more just a collection of shiny objects. You do have to use your imagination. Also remember that buildings come in different shapes. Anyway, just something to play with.   Posted: 05/04/2020 20:23:50

Some more buildings, a little more of the reflection, and blurred as Leonid showed, and you really will have your micro city as seen from across the river.   Posted: 05/05/2020 14:43:47

Judy, I would encourage you to try it. I have seen it done with backgrounds added which I will be trying.

Unique use of your imagination to create a city scape wothout clutter. It does not take much of my imagination to turn the various shapes into building that I have seen around the world . Any way you could introduce a shadow water line ? Nice crisp photo   Posted: 05/09/2020 15:27:56

I love the abstract quality of this and I think it is great and does remind me of a city, so totally refer to it as that!! I think I would like to see the objects a little crisper above the reflection, but as Leonid suggests, I do think it would be cooler if the reflection was slightly out of focus. Very striking image.   Posted: 05/19/2020 10:00:50

Great idea, Dorinda. Insomuch as the staples more nearly mimic the building look than do the screws, I would use more of the staples to get a skyline effect.   Posted: 05/22/2020 12:21:11
