Season's End by Jon Joyce

January 2020 - Season's End

About the Image(s)

I photographed these Rose of Sharon seed pods and photo stacked frames to produce the final image. I tried several backgrounds and finally decided on this old barn photo taken a few years ago before the structure was renovated. It seemed to fit the “Season’s End” theme. I tried to increase the shop-worn effect with some grunge and texture overlays plus decreasing the opacity of the background.

The Rose of Sharon seed pods look just great in front of the field and barn. It is a really nice picture. I am neutral on the grunge and texture additions, as it would look just as good to me without these modifications. It might look slightly nicer if you reduced the inward tilt of the silos.   Posted: 01/02/2020 13:30:20

Jon, I like your composition and treatment of this very much. I agree with Robert, it would be helpful if you could straighten the silos. I would add a little bit more canvas above the silos as well. Easy to do in PS.   Posted: 01/02/2020 13:58:27

Strong photo and reminds me of crops that are raised on theland and buarns used to store the fruits of the farmers work. I agree with both of the above quitiques. Bood creative work.   Posted: 01/11/2020 12:56:52

A lovely image I agree with straightening the silos and perhaps decreasing the opacity of the texture Perhaps just a foggy smooth blur would work I like the foggy feel to the background contrasted to the lovely sharp seed pods   Posted: 01/11/2020 20:55:34

So, I always look at the photos in this group and think about what I feel before I read the description of how it was done. My first thought was this looks doctored, like those seed ads were in no way growing near that barn. And that's ok for me. I don't feel you need to obsess about straightening out the silos, because the seed pods aren't straight and I think it blends well.   Posted: 01/14/2020 10:17:03

I like it, the only destruction is a blue spot on the right side.   Posted: 01/20/2020 17:40:10
