Bearded Man Dozing by Judy Merson

August 2019 - Bearded Man Dozing

About the Image(s)

I was leaving the supermarket several weeks ago and caught sight of this man dozing in the sun. I took it handheld with my Olympus TG4 set on scene action mode. Settings set by camera were ISO 200 f4.4 1/800 sec The lens is 14.41 or about 76 in 35 mm equivalent. I took it into Lightroom Classic CC basic. Then I went into PSCC and cropped and cloned out a woman behind him and some distractions. I had cut off his shoes so I added some canvas and cloned the shoes

This induces me to wonder about the man. To my mind, the car behind the man's head is a distraction, but I think the tree trunk ought to stay as its tilt complements the tilt of the man's head.   Posted: 08/02/2019 12:43:05

This image tells a story, and makes me feel sad. I'm guessing he was recently released from a hospital: he has a hospital wristband on his left arm, and the yellow socks are "hospital" socks. Yellow socks mean "high risk for fall". They released him but he has no place to go. As per photographically, I agree about removing the car, but I would also crop to just above his pants cuff. I'm sorry to say the area you cloned does not look right. Good story, however.

Thank you for your comments
I will remove the car. I was going to crop the feet, but wanted to try the cloning I guess if I worked harder it might work. I wish I had gotten all of him in camera.. My excuse is I rushed since I felt bad taking it since I thought he might be down and out. However he did have some groceries and a drink to his right which I cropped out. I was hoping someone might be coming to pick him up The hospital is about 1.5 miles away.   Posted: 08/02/2019 14:16:28

I enjoy photojournalism, but am often hesitant to intrude with my camera as well. My "story" fits then, if the hospital is that close.

Absolutely, try again with the cloning, otherwise I still recommend cropping the feet out.

Good story photo and but by the gtace...
The yellow socks are a part of the story but would like to see the entire shoe next time you have a chance at a photo such as this one. Leaving a bit off of the subject usually leaves questions in the viewers mind. Good comments and a thought provoking photo.   Posted: 08/03/2019 09:25:30

Agree, the car behind should be taking out and I would have a little be more area of canvas at the top and the bottom and on the right side, you cut his arm and part of the shoes.   Posted: 08/06/2019 14:58:59

The shoes do look a little off, especially since the rest of him is all in focus. I would crop out the car as well. I tried to see if you could crop off mid-leg, but it looks weird. It is a great snap shot of a moment in time though!!   Posted: 08/10/2019 08:41:23

I love a mystery and this one really has it. If that was your intention, you can see from the above discussion, you succeeded spectacularly! The feet are a problem as the yellow socks are an important part of the story. Perhaps cropping enough to leave only the top of the left shoe. Cloning out the car is a good idea, too.   Posted: 08/10/2019 14:43:30
