Amaryllis by Karen Harris

February 2021 - Amaryllis

About the Image(s)

I got an amaryllis bulb as a Christmas present. I was not really familiar with them but I followed all directions and in just a few weeks it grew into a gorgeous plant with, eventually, five beautiful blooms. I put the plant on the floor and wrapped the pot and area around it with a piece of black velvet cloth that I often use for still life shots, i used a 60mm closeup lens and shot in low ambient light at f22 for 20 seconds.

It is a beautiful shot! My only comment would be regarding the focus point, it seems to be on the tip of the flowers on the right. Perhaps I would have liked to see it on the front flower tips. Great idea with the black drop!   Posted: 02/10/2021 13:47:08

Karen, this is a beautiful image, composed and exposed and I like your idea of using the black velvet cloth background. I agree, that the focus would be better on the center flower and since you were on tripod switching to f32 would go a long way in gaining max depth of field.   Posted: 02/12/2021 09:51:04

This is a beautiful image and well planned and executed. It looks sharp to me, but my sight is not the best. You had a variety of options and I hope you took a lot of shots of the beautiful flower. There is also a lot you could do with post-processing---paint effect, twirls, monochrome etc. You could even crop out portions of this image for more detail. Well done.   Posted: 02/15/2021 12:02:00

Nothing like beautiful red flowers to grab attention! Great composition and use of your black velvet cloth. To play on Judy's comment about post-processing, the filaments look like planes coming out of the blooms.   Posted: 02/15/2021 14:12:28
