Getting Ready For Winter by Bill Foy

February 2021 - Getting Ready For Winter

About the Image(s)

This image was made in the fall of 2014 at Altesimo Winery in Montalcino, Italy. After removing all the existing vines in this area of the vineyard, the fields are plowed and new vines will be planted in the spring. Nikon D300s, Tamron 18-270mm lens @270mm, f/22, 1/40, ISO-200. I don't recall what I did in processing the image.

Bill, I like the dust being created in the field. I wonder if you took the image wider than 270mm or you cropped this image. I had 2 thoughts, the building on the right is cut off and maybe that would add information to the image and where it was taken. I might of shot wider to include more of the rolling hills? back in the frame and that might also of shown some of the good vineyard. The image itself without "copy" to me shows a bulldozer or (tractor with tracks) creating dust.   Posted: 02/12/2021 10:01:39

Thanks, Bob. I was standing pretty far away, at the top row of the remaining vineyard. You might imagine how small that tractor would look at f/150, or f/18. The surrounding area is far from picturesque. my memory of the building on the right was that I cropped in half because it was mostly hidden by vegetation. This was late September/early October and the remaining vineyard had been picked and was turning ugly. This image is f/18 and is to the left of the area where my submitted image was made.   Posted: 02/15/2021 14:34:04

I agree with Bob that a wider shot might have told a better story here. I'm sure it was quite a sight to see.   Posted: 02/14/2021 20:28:10

This looks like the Palouse! I thought about cropping the top right, but that puts the machine in the center. I like the detail in the field and dust. This looks like an area with many photo ops, but you may not have been able to get closer. That is often the case when we are out photographing:-(.   Posted: 02/15/2021 12:24:49

Thanks, Judy. At the time I had made this image I had not seen the Palouse, except in other people's images, so that wasn't something I was thinking about.   Posted: 02/15/2021 14:39:27

Love the dust, perhaps the image could be a bit sharper and I probably would have left the old barn in the frame or crop out all the way. Very nice image, I also like the wide shot with the raw of vines. Time for a glass of wine:-)   Posted: 02/15/2021 16:25:55
