Unfurling Frond by Judy Burr, APSA, MPSA

October 2020 - Unfurling Frond

About the Image(s)

I took this on a photo trip to Ireland in 2015, but didn’t use a tripod. As I recall, it was a walk through foliage and I had to be careful. I used mu EM5 and 12-50mm lens at 43mm=86 with crop factor. I may have used the close-up setting, but don’t use the lens now since I have some better ones. ISO was 500, f 8 and SS was 1/200. As you know I don’t do much nature, but the pattern caught my eye. I cropped quite a bit since the frond was in the middle. I processed it in PS Elements and NIK. It was too bright around the frond so I used Topaz lens effects to darken more of it.

So, now we know why it's called "The Emerald Isle"! I like the unfolding frond - it's sharp and nicely colored. I think it would be better if it were more diagonally positioned. I think the red in background is very distracting, just because it's red in an otherwise all green image. I wonder if you really blurred the background if that would improve the image?   Posted: 10/12/2020 13:48:35

Judy, good seeing to find this pattern. Nicely exposed. I think I would of cropped the left edge and at the same time rotated the image so the Frond angled up in the upper right quadrant. The upper third of the image currently isn't really adding anything. The red at the right edge will be diminished when you crop.   Posted: 10/12/2020 15:06:36

I am not sure why I don;t think of turning things, but I may have taken it this way because of its position or mine. I cropped a lot so I will go back and work on the original which will give me more room to rotate. I don't know if that is permitted in nature or not, but it can go in PID.   Posted: 10/16/2020 17:07:13

Well here is what Bob suggested. It is nice this way too. I actually really like the red in the background a lot and I also like the vague fern shapes too. Nice job.   Posted: 10/13/2020 20:46:21

Karen,
This picture needed your magic touch. I like what you did with it. Since I cropped to much, the original will give me more room to rotate it. You really made a nice improvement. Thanks.   Posted: 10/16/2020 17:09:09

Very nice capture, the red does not bother me. I like the way Karen was able to have it point up a bit, seems to flow better for me.   Posted: 10/13/2020 21:36:53
