Snooty Elk by Karen Harris

October 2019 - Snooty Elk

About the Image(s)

This image was taken at Sprague Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. We were walking around the lake when about a half dozen female elk decided to go wading. I shot several photos but I like this one with her nose in the air.

For some reason I could not open this in Elements so I just give some comments. I like the position of the elk, but would like more detail in the dark areas. The horizon is not level which doesn't count for much in nature competition. This is really a nice capture.   Posted: 10/10/2019 16:55:58

Just got home from being gone 3 weeks and had some time to repair it a bit. Is this what you had in mind?   Posted: 10/11/2019 14:53:48

Not being a wildlife photographer, my comments may not be useful, but hey, I get paid to try to help. To me the image looks much better straightened. I'd suggest swimming across the lake to get the sunny side of the elk's head. I'm sure she would wait. The eye seems lighter in your redo, but the grass is still to bright for me. The title is great, but I wonder how she fared in the rutting season, given her attitude!   Posted: 10/11/2019 21:53:38

The second image isn't a "clean up" of the first, it's a different image, with the elk's legs situated differently and more of the environment evident in the background. I like the second better.   Posted: 10/24/2019 13:54:45
