Rainbow Elk by Karen Harris

August 2019 - Rainbow Elk

About the Image(s)

We were in Estes Park, Colorado this past week and our last evening there we were treated to this amazing scene. We were inside our condo while it was raining and then the rain stopped and the sun came out. I went outside to see if we would get a rainbow and we did. Just as the rainbow was at it's brightest, 50-60 elk walked through the scene. I didn't have much time to set anything so it was taken on automatic on my Nikon D750.

It does pay to be watchful and it really paid off for you. It is a great shot and the elk and rainbow make it even more special. The light is fabulous and the image is a winner.   Posted: 08/13/2019 12:37:03

I think that you hit on the perfect reason for Auto. It is the best choice for "getting" the shot when time is of the essence.
That being said, I would still use post-processing to draw the viewers eye through the scene as you want. In my example I burned some of the foreground and background to add dimension to what the camera tries to make match a similar image in its database. I hoped to not have the elk compete with the rainbow and hill.   Posted: 08/19/2019 14:55:14

80% skill and 20% luck. Being at the right place at the right time. I think this is a great shot. The colors and depth of field are right on throughout.

Estes park is on my bucket list.
