The North End by James Weidenfeller

August 2019 - The North End

About the Image(s)

A regular haunt the last few months is Boston after dark. Three or four of us go in about an hour before sunset and pick our spots for the night’s shooting. Having eaten here several times I knew it had to be a back drop for our theme for the night of Urban Street Scene. I thought this told a great story using all the characters from the two women sitting, the hostess in the door and the family trying to decide.
Canon 5D MK III, Canon 50mm f/1.2L, ISO 200, 1/200 sec @ f/2.2. July 1, 2019, 6:50 PM. Processed in LR 6 cropped slightly. No tripod.

This is a really neat shot. I do wish you had asked the guy in the blue-gray shirt to take a hike, but I suppose that would't have been even remotely polite. :-) Except for him, it is really really good. I love the people inside and the lady looking out at the other two folks.   Posted: 08/07/2019 16:05:43

Yeah, but that would have spoiled the spontaneity that I thought was captured here.   Posted: 08/08/2019 09:20:54

Nice street scene, and fine juxtapositions of the groups of people. I rotated it .29 degrees to the right to straighten it a tiny bit--that required a slight crop.   Posted: 08/11/2019 18:21:28

This is a well caught moment and could do well in PJ or travel. The group of 3 is the "right" number, but I would like to see the face of the man in the shorts. All that, if you set it up, then it can't go in PJ or PT. The color is great and I assume the food is too.   Posted: 08/13/2019 12:48:14

Great street photo. Good story, perfect technically. Works for me as a B&W too.   Posted: 08/19/2019 15:19:20

Love the North End. Back in my consulting days I spent a lot of time in the Boston area and I went directly from Logan to the North End for dinner on every trip. Now my granddaughter's in college in Cambridge and she, too, loves the North End.

I really like this shot. Would be great in Group 80. For me, the image is about the woman at the door and the apparent conversation she's having with the trio.   Posted: 08/23/2019 09:59:12

I'll have to check out group 80. The woman in the door is what caught my eye also. I think she does make the shot. The three people were not posed. I don't think their faces or backs really take that much away from the overall story.

Do you still get to Boston. If so, let me know. Maybe we could do lunch. I'm only a short trip down the road.

Just about a year ago, I had to go to the north side of Cambridge. Never gave a thought that it was move in day at M.I.T. AND Harvard. I should have packed a lunch.
