Trombone Player by Bill Foy

June 2018 - Trombone Player

About the Image(s)

Another Paris Metro shot converted to B&W. I was coming down from a Metro train to switch to another when I saw this man playing, of all things, a trombone (not the greatest sound in a tiled environment). I was perched on a landing about 4-5 steps above him. Liked the idea that I'd be able to catch some people moving, since motion is one of my favorite photographic things. I wanted the people to be indistinct, but recognizable - what you'd expect to see in a Metro station. The woman on my left was a surprise to me! Nikon D300s, Tamron 18-270mm lens, f/5, 1/8, ISO-800, Focal Length 50mm, Manual Exposure, Center Weighted Average Metering

Good capture and very appropriate for monochrome. The figure on the left takes up too much space for me so I cropped most of it out. I debated about the figure on the right side since the face was cut off, but didn't feel as if that worked. I cloned outthe white area along the bottom.   Posted: 06/14/2018 12:43:19

Street photography is not for the timid. I like your explanation of why you took this image. What I would have liked better is to take on the musician head on, and use a wider focal length. That would get you pretty close to the subject, isolate him more from the wall, and I think, add a lot of interest. A couple steps closer, to the left, and say test it at 24 mm for a DX camera.   Posted: 06/19/2018 18:21:43

I like this. I "travel" the subways of Boston more than I sometimes like. Haven't thought of trying this. I like your approach. B&W works very well. I find the woman in black a little distracting, but she adds to the image. Secondary story, her rushing to the train. Word of caution. Read last week of the European Union's recent enacted law about photographing in public places. This could be a problem from here on in.
