Maid of the Mist by Bob Wills

June 2018 - Maid of the Mist

About the Image(s)

I'm still going through my older images and re-processing them. I took this on from a Maid of the Mist tour boat at Niagara Falls. "It was a dark and stormy...." I took the original in 2012. I originally wanted to capture how misty wet it was below the falls, and capture the size of the falls without actually creating a postcard image. I started cropping, and before too long the falls were gone. It is now a boat image. I cropped, lowered the exposure and highlights, and used the new profile tools in LR to create this composition. Nikon D800, 70-200 mm lens @ 80 mm, 200 ISO, 1/50 sec at f9.0, spot metered, aperture priority, hand held. I shoot in RAW, so no EV.

I'm not sure what to make of your comment, but the more I look, I think I was too heavy handed with the spotlight. I know that you mostly stick with reality photography, so this probably has no appeal to you. That is fine.   Posted: 06/11/2018 10:24:46

I have no clue what the profile tools are and don't know what effect that had on the total image. It is interesting seeing the mist without the falls and I understand why you did that. I imagine you lost detail because of the crop. The boat looks as if it has a spotlight on it, but I may be seeing things! The sky looks very grainy and I tried to fix it with DeNoise.
It has a nice appeal with a bit of mystery.   Posted: 06/14/2018 12:23:08

Profiles were added to LR CC and ACR in April. Profiles are starting points based on millions of similar photos being compared to the image being developed. Unlike presets, which move tonal, color, and effects sliders for you, profiles just give you a jpeg like starting point and then you can edit and create your image into your style without limiting the sliders.   Posted: 06/25/2018 09:16:28

Hmmm. If you take a look at the Helpful Links menu above, I posted a video about the new profiles section on ALR and PS CC update last month. Take a look. I don't know if Elements has profile selections

I removed many of the helpful links I had up. I haven't gotten any feedback from the group that they were actually "helpful"   Posted: 06/25/2018 09:18:29

It is hard to take picture in misty and storm. As for me,I think your picture is nice.
Your picture tells stories.I like the back ground.I think leave it color ,do not turn black and white. The mist makes the picture more value...   Posted: 06/19/2018 22:34:31

Thanks, Tam. It is really wet below Niagra Falls. It was a struggle to put my camera to the wet test.   Posted: 06/23/2018 21:59:48

Now I know I was right not to take that boat ride! I like your image. It's kind of eerie and better without the falls.   Posted: 06/24/2018 20:30:10

Thanks, Bill. We actually liked the ride, but photography was probably not a great idea. Sometimes you just gotta enjoy the experience!   Posted: 06/24/2018 20:39:52

I really like this shot I think the mood is great. Maybe the spotlight is just a tad too much, but not very at all I agree with Tam that it has some excellent elements.   Posted: 06/25/2018 08:51:59
