Big Red Splash by Karen Harris

January 2018 - Big Red Splash

About the Image(s)

Since we have been rather frozen in here in the mid west, I decided to set up my water drop photography once again in our basement. The setup consists of an old wooden chair with a hole drilled in it to hold my Walgreen's plastic water dropper and a jelly roll pan with water in it under the chair which is on a table. I drop the water with my left hand while I operate my remote shutter release with my right hand. I use my NIkon close up lens. I was thrilled to get this one the other day. The wild splash occurs when one drop is splashing back up when another is on the way down.

Great winter eh. We had a nice little storm here last week. Hadn't gone above freezing for three weeks. Today it's 54 degrees. Tomorrow for the Pats game it's supposed to be in the 20's again.

I have been wanting to try water splashes for a long time but that old enemy procrastination keeps popping its ugly head.

I like this image of yours. Nice and sharp and great splash. Well done.   Posted: 01/12/2018 09:40:27

I am really impressed with your explanation of how you did this. It is extremely well written, and I applaud you. The image itself is really well done technically- Sharp focus on the subject, soft background with detail. Beautifully exposed and framed. The splashes provide a nice diagonal, and this work keeps you out of the cold. If you plan to show this competitively, I would consider removing some of the spectral highlights from the individual drops. You didn't mention your light source, but it seems smallish to me. You and Jim have inspired me to do some macro since I can no longer negotiate long walks. Well done on all fronts.   Posted: 01/12/2018 11:02:59

I love it! I, too, have had intentions for trying this kind of thing, but other things get in the way. It is good to have winter projects like this to keep us shooting. I wonder what is coloring the water as it seems to be a brown and green mix. I guess the brown may be from the chair, but what about the green? I love the drop that is coming up as it is so perfectly formed and the splash of red is caught well. I wish this were my shot.   Posted: 01/13/2018 12:49:51

I used red food color in the water in the dropper and I use a bit of black food color in the pan because it seems to reduce glare. After dropping the red into the black for a while a kind of brown occurs. I keep having to change the water in the pan.

LOVE this shot!!! Intrigued by the shape of the lower drop, I went looking and think it most resembles a pyriform - reminds me of a bottle stopper. The disintegration of the upper drop is almost mesmerizing.   Posted: 01/16/2018 14:40:21
