Big Red Van Gogh by Tom Johnson

July 2020 - Big Red Van Gogh

About the Image(s)

Went to Holland Michigan 2 years ago in late July. Found out that they were going to have a full moon. Took my tripod and gear and headed to Holland State park. There were several people there to photograph the event. Snapped several shots. I looked at the original-which is nice and choose to do a "Van Gogh" oil paint. Used the warp tool in PS and brushed up the trees and swivels in the water. Then transformed the image to oil paint. Nikon 750 shooting 120mm f/10 4 secs at ISO 1600.

I am a fan of van Gogh, but not of this stylistic type of photography. That said---I feel you did a fine job with this It shows creative thought and planning and lots and lots of patience. One of the better efforts I've seen of this type of work. You just might have gained a fan. :-)   Posted: 07/05/2020 15:56:29

I enjoy using the painterly filters. It gives a new dimension and art to the image. It becomes very original to the artist.

I like how it turned out. Looks like an authentic Van Gogh painting.   Posted: 07/07/2020 11:55:51

Thank You Kathy. I went into the Liquidify tool filter in photoshop and used the forward warp tool to shift up the trees. I also used 2 new tools in liquidify. Twirl clockwise tool and the pucker tool to make cool designs in the water and the clouds.   Posted: 07/07/2020 12:20:59

Thanks for your incredible compliment. I heard the other day that Van Gogh never made any money on his paintings while he was alive. It was when he died that his painting skyrocketed in value.   Posted: 07/16/2020 11:14:51

Isn't that often the case Tom........someitmes books and much of the art work happens that way. Maybe at least he left a legacy for his decendents.   Posted: 07/19/2020 05:48:52
