Ghost Rider by Lauren Heerschap

March 2023 - Ghost Rider

About the Image(s)

This is a continuation of a monochrome series of conversation starter photos from an antique store that I plan to submit to a retirement home gallery. ISO 200 , f8.o, 1/60 sec, it was processed in Silver Efex Pro and Photoshop for the Gaussian blur background. I am debating a different crop, but like the idea of the perspective of a child getting up on the horse. What do you think? Any better title suggestions than “Ghost Rider”?

Fun image. A few suggestions, I have learned that we always want to read signs. I would clone out the Caution sign. I would also try to make the horse a little more contrasty, concentrating on the eye. I love the title.   Posted: 03/07/2023 21:52:22

Quite an entertaining image. Agree re the sign. I feel the horse is a little squashed in the frame, and maybe whole of the base could be in the shot.   Posted: 03/08/2023 12:01:21

I feel that you have cropped in a little too tightly, and should have included all of the base. I agree that the sign would have been better cloned out, even though it is a relatively important part of the story. I fell that a little more of the form of the horse could have been brought out by applying a little more contrast.   Posted: 03/13/2023 04:11:11

I like the horse, even though it is a toy horse if gives the impression of movement. I understand that the black "post" is an integral part of the setup, but I would suggest cloning it out.   Posted: 03/14/2023 16:39:12

Jan, these horses were common in front of stores as a fun ride for children, but you don't see them anymore. Probably liabilities and parents who trusted them to keep a kid happy and left them while shopping! I remember playing on them. It is a sad reflection of the lack of trust and safety now in our society. This is a photo to start conversations in a retirement home.   Posted: 03/15/2023 05:44:15

Lauren, I live in a retirement home. Understand what you mean to say, but as a artistic image, I still would like to see the horse without that that machine. Now, if this is solely meant as a representational image(the one old people can remenis about), then leave it in.   Posted: 03/15/2023 12:33:32

Interesting project and pretty cool retro subject. The photo does seem to be cropped pretty tightly, is there more room in the original? Perhaps a little more contrast might bring out a little more white in the horse.   Posted: 03/14/2023 16:46:31

OK so now you can play - here is the original. How would you crop it?   Posted: 03/15/2023 05:40:41

Really like this idea. The shot is fun in color too but understand you want to do a series. I did play with it based on what others said about the base and print.
I did a selective focus and vignette. Not sure I like it any better. I did straighten the photo around the post.
There is some pretty cool stuff in the background. What is that box to the right? It looks old too.
So, being late to the party, here is my take.
Great subject and idea.   Posted: 03/21/2023 11:50:53
