Humpback by Brad Ashbrook

February 2021 - Humpback

About the Image(s)

Not only did we dolphins on our honeymoon during the whale watch trip, but we also saw several humpback whales. Unless they breach (unfortunately they did not), this is the most exciting thing to photograph. Not much editing done, a slight crop leaving the horizon, basic raw adjustments and a slight increase with the Pro Contrast filter in NIK Color Efex Pro 4.

Tails are about what you get to see, unless you get lucky. What is fun is that these immense creatures go on a cycle - from Hawaii Maui in the winter and to Alaska in the summer. We saw the same pod on vacation and also in Puget Sound. It is thrilling to see how huge they are. You did well with the shot, and I like the shade of the water. The scientist on our boat told us they can identify the specific whales by marks on their tails.   Posted: 02/09/2021 13:02:25

I like the simplicity of this shot, just seeing the tail of the whale about to disappear into the water. The water streaming down from the tail, helps to give. a good impression of its size. The large separation between the tail and the sea would be critiqued by many 'photo judges', but I feel that is important in helping to covey the size of the whale and the vastness of the ocean.   Posted: 02/10/2021 05:20:55

Tail is well positioned in the frame. Water running off in streams is really nice. The colours have been kept natural.
i understand that the horizon helps show where we are, but I think a closer in crop is also a good view. Great shot.   Posted: 02/17/2021 05:23:00

I like how the water streams off of the tail like a waterfall. The colors are beautiful.   Posted: 02/17/2021 17:55:51

Lucky you at being able to capture this shot. Like others, I like the water streaming off his tail. It gives the sense of motion and size.   Posted: 02/18/2021 09:19:15

Nice shot, at the right moment. I like the position of the whale and the wide view of the ocean, ending in the horizon far away.   Posted: 02/19/2021 15:29:58
