Skagit Valley Eagles by Lauren Heerschap

December 2020 - Skagit Valley Eagles

About the Image(s)

This is titled, Skagit Valley Eagles, it was shot with my Olympus OMD Em Mark 2, on a 40-150 mm lens with a 2x teleconverter. I was thrilled to get the action stopped of a bird flying, particularly an eagle. My settings were ISO 2500, 300 mm, f18, 1/250. I processed this in Lightroom, then Photoshop, I removed a branch from the eagle’s beak, and then increased the shadows under the wings by layering two photos.

I am curious how others would have processed the photo?

Lauren, perfect timing. You were able to get the bird in the opening of the branches. The eagles stay as a couple for life and they alternate in sitting over the eggs and to bring food for the chicks. You were lucky to get a sharp image of a flying bird with 1/250 sec shutter speed. Maybe a tighter crop will make the birds more prevalent in the frame.   Posted: 12/05/2020 07:49:00

Well done to capture the shot. The main problem is the amount to branches etc surrounding the nest which are obstructing the view of the bird. I would crop your present version along the top just to remove the branch top right.
The use of multiple exposures as I commented about on Brad's shot, would possibly have given you one with the bird a little further forwards and having less obstructions in front of the lefthand wing.   Posted: 12/08/2020 03:41:44

Eagles are wonderful birds to photograph, are beautiful and big. I think the comments are spot on, a little tighter crop will help since there are so many branches.   Posted: 12/08/2020 11:13:42

Great catch, but I agree with Brad, a little tighter crop would help bring separation between the eagle and the branches.   Posted: 12/09/2020 10:35:02

A great shot. I agree with Jon to crop it more tightly as the multitude of branches tend to distract.   Posted: 12/25/2020 16:58:56

Great story shot here with eagle coming in to land in the nest. I quite like the branches as it puts the nest in context. It is possible that the image may not have enough resolution to crop in closer.   Posted: 12/27/2020 04:43:29

Oh, what fun! Great capture. I might have made it a portrait to eliminate the branches on the right.
Very exciting that you got to see the couple.   Posted: 12/27/2020 09:58:32
