About the Image(s)

This was made at a recent local photo shoot where the models dressed up as fairies.
It was outdoors, so only natural light was available.

I think it would have been better to have a stronger depth of field. It seems a bit too busy for me to have everything in sharp focus. Also that plant near her thigh is very distracting to me.   Posted: 09/10/2020 19:54:16

To me the model has been badly positioned so that she is lit by the sun coming through the trees, which has created a combination of burnt out or in shadow areas across her. The use of a large reflector or flash could have helped to even up the contrast. I find the background quite distracting and being too much in sharp focus.   Posted: 09/11/2020 06:30:52

Well, this is sort of a punk Midsummer Night's Dream. I am not a portrait photographer, so I haven't a clue how to improve it, and you didn't provide the information on your camera settings, lens, etc. Her skin is very pale, and so the shadows on it give a sort of unearthly effect; the shadows of plants make her part of the forest. Or you could say the light is not very soft. It depends on what you were after. Fairies can be very tricky. I think you could come up with a more interesting title too.   Posted: 09/11/2020 22:13:22

Interesting photo session. As I'm just learning about portraits, I would support the use of a reflector. If an assistant could have held one, the tones on her face would have been consistent.
In hindsight, using a shallower DOF might have removed the background distractions. You might be able to do some of that by blurring (or whatever) in post production.
The bright fingernail polish could be toned down as well as the foreground plant.
Wonder what this would look like if cropped to just a shoulder or waist up shot. So I played. I cropped, increased haze, edited out distracting bright background spots, increased shadows and did a focal blur I like the fantasy.   Posted: 09/22/2020 18:59:22

The costume is very nice and in a better spot could have made for a nice portrait. As is the lighting is very harsh and I agree with the background being very busy.   Posted: 09/23/2020 09:50:20

She is certainly an interesting subject. The tilted head and flowing hair is nice. The head is well placed on the thirds.
As noted the bright light on parts of the body are difficult to capture and too much detail in the background.   Posted: 09/24/2020 03:58:34
