Playful Shadows by Renee Schaefer

November 2019 - Playful Shadows

About the Image(s)

This image was taken at Photo Expo in NYC last week. Many of the exhibitors had professional models with interesting shoots. I liked this one in particular because of the interesting shadows that were projected onto the screen behind her. I love the texture that is seen in the shadows. This is straight out of the camera.

What an interesting image. I love the rainbow of colors and colored "shadows". I would suggest that the model's eye has a
circle of light around it that could be toned down, and you might be able to get the colors also on her face. Also a little work in Photoshop with a dodge and burn layer using a brush would lighten the colors in her hat and make the details pop a bit more. She also has fabric or netting on her chest which could be iridescent, it would be interesting to see the colors repeated there.   Posted: 11/05/2019 16:47:49

I'll try. Thanks.
Her headdress was black. The colors were just from the lights. The bodice of her dress was also black with sequins reflecting the colored lights, but I might be able to do more in photoshop.   Posted: 11/07/2019 10:48:37

Oh, Renee! I love this.
The only think I might have done is try a portrait crop thereby eliminating some of the dark shoulder shadow. It might also draw you to her face with the colorful eyes and top. There would still be some yellow on the left. What a fun shoot.   Posted: 11/11/2019 13:38:59

I really like your idea for this image, it is simple but highly effective. I feel however that a few minor tweaks could strengthen it. Lowering the top of the background to just above the shadows would raise the face to a stronger position on to an intersection of the thirds. There is a lighter area around an eye and some highlights on the face that would be better toned down and there are some coloured dots created by the sequins which could have their saturation/ brightness increased.   Posted: 11/12/2019 02:52:49
