Coat Hangers by Jose Cartas

September 2020 - Coat Hangers

About the Image(s)

The picture was taken by mistake. I focused on the coat hangers (inside a church in Bremen, Germany), and then pressed the button without realizing the slow shutter speed. I was not sure whether the photo was taken or not and moved the camera, until I heard the shutter closing. Mentally, I put the shot in to the "delete" pile, but when I looked at the final result, I found it somehow interesting. I converted it into B&W, but the original had anyway two tones. Technical specifications: 100mm. lens, 15 sec. at f/18, ISO 50, handheld.

To me this image looks abstract and surreal. The lines and curves are interesting. There is good contrast after you have converted it to monochrome. I think you have given this photo an attractive visual effect.   Posted: 09/10/2020 05:35:25

What an interesting mistake! I am pleased that you did not throw it away, as you have created a most pleasing abstract.
I have used this technique quite frequently with trees in a forest to get a mysterious appearance that differs from reality. Of course its all hit and miss depending on the speed and direction that you move the camera. I am lucky to get 1 decent image out of 20 tries.   Posted: 09/10/2020 09:16:13

You will be smiling about this happy mistake a long time. It is interesting and makes a great abstract. It is very nice in B/W, looks electrified and no one could guess what it really is. The moral: always check the delete pile one last time before pushing the button!   Posted: 09/12/2020 14:22:06
