My Garden by Mervyn Hurwitz

June 2020 - My Garden

About the Image(s)

Photographed this year in Soweto. I particularly liked the colored washing on the line. The little boy was a bonus in the composition.

Sony A7 72mm. ISO 100 f8, 1/200secs Hand held

Good shot, and so poignant. I particularly notice that the "garden" edging consists of empty bottles.   Posted: 06/06/2020 17:26:51

Such a great capture. There's so much to see and think about. The garden border is all telling about how everything is used. Without the boy it's a strong image of poverty, and the clothes line and all the textures and blues are beautiful, but the boy takes the image to another level. The tiniest thing I might try to fix is where his head meets the clothing, but I'm not sure it matters. The story grabs your heart.   Posted: 06/09/2020 08:34:29

Like your previous photo from Soweto, this one also tells a compelling story. In spite of being a shot "on the run," it is very well composed, with many elements that contribute to a good image: the curved rope line moving from the left border to the top, the line of bottles delineating the garden, the texture and color of the hut, even the round bucket is at the right spot. I don't mind the boy in the middle or his head touching the clothes, since it's clearly not a posed photo. I would only suggest to get rid of the leaves on the left and, if possible, adding just a little of sky (plus some leaves and hut) at the top.   Posted: 06/10/2020 14:51:29

hje composition is really good. The leading line of the garden edging to the basic and the boy is picked up by the line of the laundry to the shack. The bright colors and the use of trash bottles to beautify the environment speaks to me of the human spirit and resilience. This is a great bit of street photography   Posted: 06/15/2020 10:50:42

Great image with a story. Would fit well as a PJ/Travel image.   Posted: 06/15/2020 16:48:07

I think the boy is naturally the centre of attention, in front of the blue painted house and the clothings which are similarly colored. Together they make your title complete and stately as "My Garden". This is a great PJ image, story telling and nicely framed.   Posted: 06/18/2020 08:25:11
