Beach Baskets by Jose Cartas

March 2020 - Beach Baskets

About the Image(s)

The photo was taken last September in North Germany, on the Baltic Sea. Warnemünde is a seaside resort near Rostock, where the East Germany nomenklatura went on vacation; and it's still a popular destination. Having lived in Kiel (also on the Baltic Sea), I don't know who wants to spend their summer there enduring wind and cold water. Anyway, to protect the tourists against inclement weather the beaches are full of these "baskets" for rental. The day was sunny, but terribly windy (as expected!). I focused on the receding line of baskets, with the sea in the background. The only post-processing was to clone out a shadow on the lower right, which was very distracting. Technical specifications: 50mm. lens, 1/400 sec. at f/18, ISO 800, handheld.

I like looking at the line created here. Everything works for me, except I would suggest feather-burning in a portion of the bottom right sand to help focus the eye towards the baskets.   Posted: 03/13/2020 14:03:55

I find this a very interesting picture. I have never seen baskets like this in Florida where I spend the winter. I like the receding line and how it draws your eye through the whole length of the picture and then the light houses in the picture draw my eye back in so it never really leaves the picture. Great work.   Posted: 03/14/2020 16:35:05

If you hadn't explained the location, my mind would continue seeing a nice warm beach. Instead of the thin beach towels, I hope heavy blankets are handed out! I like the lovely blues all around and the composition is well done, capturing a receding angle with no people in the baskets. I would only touchup the one darker spot on the sand near the right lower side.   Posted: 03/15/2020 14:00:14

Interesting repetition of colors in these baskets which matches the color in the sky. Well seen and perfectly composed. I am enjoying the simplicity of the scene.   Posted: 03/15/2020 17:30:36

In my opinion the blue color of the sky, the sea and the baskets, on top of a repeating pattern in a diagonal composition create a serene and beautiful image (even after you have mentioned how windy it is).   Posted: 03/24/2020 02:08:58
