About the Image(s)

On a recent PSA Chapter outing to downtown Chicago, this was one of the areas we passed by. The circular tower is one of the more distinguishable buildings on the river front. I really liked how the parking garage added to the design elements, especially in monochrome. The color images was first optimized by combining three exposures, straightened the buildings, and then for B&W, I removed the annoying sign, and changed the tones for the tower. The original is the normal exposure from the series without any optimization.

I like the black and white version and you did a great job processing it. I wish that where you removed the sign it could be cleaner. I also find the rail on the right side distracting mainly because of it's slant compared to the others. In looking closely it might be because there is a ramp there and it is following it. These towers always attract my attention when in downtown Chicago.   Posted: 11/03/2019 22:11:05

Bob, I love this type of photography. We know it is an architectural shot but it also has strong graphic content. The b&w conversion was a good choice as it concentrates my attention to the lines, circles, curves and other shapes in the image. Good idea to remove the signage on the bottom building.   Posted: 11/07/2019 16:03:20

What an unusual design. It reminds me somehow of a whale. The BW makes all the difference. It makes all the varying lines and angles really pop. Nice job getting rid of the car and sign. It would be preferable to have the one railing section pulled up on right if possible. Very nice architectural image.   Posted: 11/10/2019 14:27:00

In think the lines, curves, shapes, and texture are impressive. I like your post processing that cleans up the image.   Posted: 11/13/2019 09:40:30

I was impressed by this parking garage when I visited Chicago four years ago. What's interesting in your photo is that you combined the visual elements of the garage tower with adjoining structures. The conversion to B&W works very well here. I don't have anything to add regarding composition. I agree with your removal of the sign. However, you need to improve the cloning, because it shows in broken diagonal lines and also in darker tones.   Posted: 11/17/2019 11:52:26

I took Belinda's advice about adjusting the one railing (which meant cloning out original and perspective change to the clone of the other rail copy).
Per Jose's suggestion, I tired to even up the patched sign area with some additional cloning, and I think it is better. This turns out to be so difficult, as that wall is so unevenly lit and smudged, plus cloning meant some perspective control, due to the perspective contours of the lines.   Posted: 11/19/2019 19:07:02
