About the Image(s)

This picture was taken on a recent trip to visit with my daughter and granddaughter. This is there pet rescue dog and they have two puppies as well. My granddaughter had taken the dog outside to brush her as Agatha was losing hair all over the house. I happened to be sitting on their deck watching. What drew my attention the similar pose of both the dog and my granddaughter and how the little flowers in the grass seem to imitate the outline of my granddaughter. The picture was taken with a 18-200 telephoto on my Nikon 200. I did some cropping and sharpening as well as some minor light and shadow adjustments and some HSL adjustments for the grass.

This is a very nice emotional shot. The viewer can sense the relationship between your granddaughter and her dog. I agree with you that the flowers help frame the main subject. My question is whether you need her full legs in the picture. Being bright, they take away from the interaction between the girl and the dog. Have you tried cropping the picture until a little over her knees (and a little from the bottom)? Doing so will bring the full attention to her face and the dog's head. Another issue is the lack of separation between her jeans and the black coat of the dog: it is difficult to find where one ends and the other starts. Making the jeans brighter will help solve this problem.   Posted: 09/08/2019 12:09:26

I concur with Jose's remarks, except I think that maybe even taking the bare legs out entirely, and cropping the bottom and right side. You would only end up with about a third of the original, but I prefer that.   Posted: 09/08/2019 12:44:07

A very sweet image, a beautiful pair, and as if Agatha is thinking about their conversation! I think Agatha was amazingly still for you to get this. Your edits are very nice and emphasize the ring of flowers (you might consider adding even more of them). I hadn't noticed the need for separating the back of the dog and jeans, but I agree it would benefit the image. Making the jeans lighter is a good solution. I don't like cutting off parts, but I a closeup draws more emphasis to the faces if that's preferred. If you crop, I would crop into the blue of the jeans.

You have captured a wonderful moment between your granddaughter and her dog. Bob's crop does emphasize their expressions. Both versions work for me. Well done.   Posted: 09/11/2019 12:35:35
