Oranges - Still Life by Mervyn Hurwitz

March 2019 - Oranges - Still Life

About the Image(s)

Our local camera club has an assignment of Still Life this month. This is the image I produced in my kitchen with a bowl of artificial ceramic oranges.

Sony A7ii 43mm
ISO 100, f16, 1/6 secs
Window light with a Mosaic LED light panel to provide the side lighting.

I like this set up. It is simple, and with the one "orange" on the side. Good rim light on dish. I do think it is not quite "level" and rotating it clockwise slightly corrects that perspective.   Posted: 03/01/2019 14:30:57

I have rotated as suggested and agree that it does improve the picture. Thanks for the advice.   Posted: 03/03/2019 11:37:04

Nicely arranged. Great shot against the black, and I especially like the luminous-looking edge from your side lighting. I think it's very realistic at first glance. To me, the peel seems too pitted--maybe too sharp. I like the pitting but would smooth some surfaces to make the oranges more real.   Posted: 03/07/2019 17:16:48

A very good composition for a still life. The reflections of the oranges and the rim light on the bowl is what make the image. At first sight I didn't notice that they were ceramic props. However, looking carefully the viewer notices something a little artificial. Maybe reducing the contrast on the oranges would result in a picture that looks more natural.     Posted: 03/11/2019 21:26:44

I don't mind the ceramic oranges. I don't knw if turning on of the front oranges so tht the green things wee turne away was a conscious decision, but it works by giving a little surprise   Posted: 03/16/2019 16:17:23

Very nice composition. Like some others I did not realize they were ceramic oranges at first. The distortion on the reflected oranges is an interesting creative touch but I can't really decide if I like it or not.   Posted: 03/22/2019 12:51:49

HI Merv. Just visiting all the groups and wondering if you changed the color of those little "stems" from blue to brown or deep green it would provide more life to the oranges.   Posted: 03/25/2019 18:47:22
