October 2018 - Heavy Metal

About the Image(s)

Taken Sat. in downtown Staunton at Queen City Mischief & Magic, a 3-day Harry Potter event with over 10,000 people. Great fun, lots of photos.
The rail wheels are from the Hogwarts Express that transported Harry. I usually like things left as close to natural as possible, but the sun shining on the metal prompted me to punch it up. I may have overdone it, and I’m not satisfied with the red area along the top. I think I need to recrop to give the large wheel more space at bottom right and allow space at the top for a heavier vignette (which might reduce the flawed look in the red paint).

Samsung Gal.9: 1/60, F/2.4, ISO 125, center weighted
Snapseed – cropped, perspective tool to increase angle, increased tonal contrasts, structure, and color saturation, added slight vignette, adjusted light in curves
FastStone – cloned/healed to remove debris in right corner and gray area in left corner; cloned small area in red along top; resized/sharpened

I like it and don't mind the red. I would probably bring out a few more details in the shadows   Posted: 10/09/2018 07:45:58

I agree with your critique and Dave's as well. I do find the red to be adistraction the wheels are what the picture is al about and the red bears o relationship to them..   Posted: 10/09/2018 20:50:09

It's a good capture of the wheels and all the surrounding elements. I don't think it's too punched up (I would have gone even further). I would like to see more of the back wheel, which you can achieve slightly increasing the exposure there. I do find the red area at the top a little distracting; so I would recommend getting rid of it, or at least darkening it.   Posted: 10/14/2018 12:07:36

Your composition is great and I love the colors in the metal. If you do have more space at the bottom of the frame, that would be preferable so that the wheel does not touch the edge of the frame. The red does not bother me as it fits the color palette seen in the metal.   Posted: 10/16/2018 13:54:24

I agree with Jose; the red area on top is distracting, and I would recommend cropping/cloning to remove it. Not too punched up for me. Might also consider toning down the bright right corner. This adds to depth, but may be too bright.   Posted: 10/16/2018 14:13:04

I too find the red at the top distracting. I think it could be cropped out without hurting the overall quality of the picture. The bright spot on the right does not bother me but I might try to eliminate the white spots underneath the train in the middle of the picture.   Posted: 10/16/2018 16:39:56
