UP Engine 844 by Kaylyn Franks

July 2017 - UP Engine 844

About the Image(s)

Attached you will find a change of pace for me. This is UP Engine 844 which traveled to the Boise, Idaho area in April. I was so fortunate to capture most of this in camera. I shot it with a Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 70-200 L series @ 85 mm, ISO 400, f/11, 1/400 sec.

I made minor adjustments in Lightroom, then imported to photoshop and cloned out debris in the curve of the tracks and painted the caboose a deeper yellow.

This was truly fun, because I had strategically planned where i could capture this magnificent engine with the potential of it spouting steam. Many other camera club members tried multiple points in the route, but were unsuccessful.

Your research was really worthwhile as you have captured the train and engine in an ideal position. The steam is always enhanced as the train climbs the hill. I was not aware that steam trains are still used in this country. The only improvement would be to take the picture very early in the morning with back light through the smoke - but I guess you had no control of that.   Posted: 07/10/2017 13:33:41

Definitely the wait was worth it to get this composition. My only suggestions would be to consider cropping a little off the bottom to bring the engine closer to the "thirds" center of interest. Possibly the lower left grasses could be burned a little bit too.   Posted: 07/10/2017 15:22:57

Really nice image. Be careful, you might end up with the train spotting "bug" :) I don't see much needed. It's a great shot. You might crop a bit of the bottom and some of the right side removing the one set of cut-off poles, but to me, that's all.   Posted: 07/10/2017 18:27:46

Great image, and well done positioning yourself.   Posted: 07/10/2017 19:19:03

Great shot. Your post processing was so good, I couldn't tell just by looking at it. I didn't notice the cut off poles. I would close them out rather than croop. I agree that cropping the bottom a bit would improve the image. There is a kind of ugly tuft of vegetation in the lower right. I would croop it out from the bottom.   Posted: 07/11/2017 20:35:35

It pays to do your homework! You got a very dynamic and beautifully composed picture. The curve of the rails flows perfectly from top to bottom and the black of the engine complements the yellow of the cars, plus the steam. I'm not so crazy about cropping from the bottom, but perhaps taking around 10% could improve the image. I do agree that you should clone out the horizontal sticks on the right.   Posted: 07/13/2017 21:34:21

Great feedback. I didn't even notice the poles on the right. Good catch.   Posted: 07/29/2017 07:36:46
