About the Image(s)

Our club photo challenge this month was to take a picture with our cellphone and edit it completely with the native cellphone camera editing function.

We were driving home last week in the late afternoon and I took several photos of the sunset. One of them included the Kohler Company’s three water towers. For the challenge, we were not to do any editing in Photoshop. I’ve included the original photo, as well as the version I submitted to the challenge.

In the native cellphone editor I straightened and cropped, adjusted the exposure and tone to bring out the roadway and to render the sunset to be more as it appeared.

I was so pleased with the result that for our Study Group I decided to clone out the windshield spots and the AAA logo in Photoshop, but otherwise leave it as it came from the cellphone editor, including the small strip of the dashboard at the bottom. It was indeed a good challenge, and a great learning experience for what is available to work with our cellphone photos without any additional apps or software.

Beautiful colors and lines to the sunset. The water tower images make me shiver reminiscent of War of the Worlds as the Martian ships invading!!   Posted: 02/11/2021 18:14:05

This is a beautiful sunset image, I really enjoy this photo. The cloud is dramatic and its colors are rich and vibrant. I like that you have used the road to act as strong leading line to draw the viewer's eye directly towards the subject. The line also give the image depth as your eye follows it from the front to the back of the photo. To my eye, the image seems a bit light and I suggest that you tone it down a little. I also find the three water towers in the lower right quadrant are distracting because my eye get pulled there. I suggest crop it out. See attached edit photo.   Posted: 02/16/2021 15:19:03

Audrey, What a nice image you have for us. I really like the water towers, I think they give substance to your image. That being said as I see it they are tilting a little. Your second image seems to have eliminated that tilt. I would not have taken them out as they add to the story of you image. The colors are warming and I like how the road seems to move through the image. Posted: 02/16/2021 18:21:23   Posted: 02/21/2021 13:52:50

Oops! I accidentally deleted Bill's comment and when I tried to get it back it came in with my bio-photo. Sorry about that, but Bill's name is still at the top of the comment.

A gorgeous sunset photo with great colors, composition, and light. I also like the water towers, but their leaning is bothersome. I also think it would be a stronger image is some of the top and left side were cropped out. I straightened the towers and cropped in the attached image.   Posted: 02/23/2021 13:20:34

I agree the towers needed to be straightened. Just haven't had time to try it myself - thanks for showing how it looks when fixed. I also surprisingly like the crop from left and top. I find I'm a "big sky" photographer, but so often when someone points it out I realize how true it is that less is more.   Posted: 02/23/2021 19:50:02
