The Village of Symi, Greece by Abe Chen

November 2020 - The Village of Symi, Greece

About the Image(s)

I had the good fortune to visit and photograph in Greece on October 21, 2014 , both on the mainland and on the islands. Greece is a treasure trove for photographers and should be on everyone's bucket list. This image was taken while visiting the village of Symi on the Island of Symi. Camera settings: f/16, 1/125, ISO-400, -0.7EV with my Nikon D300 and Nikkor 17-50 mm f2.8 lens set at 48mm.

In post processing, LR and photoshop CS4 were used to edit the image.

Instead of saying "I wish I was there, I am saying I am here" when looking at this image... Composition, good saturation of colors, shadows all give depth to this picture. Agree Greece has been on my bucket list for a long time, however, at age 18 (or is it 81?) I don't think I'll make. I did do something else about Greece; I adopted my youngest from there (53 years ago).   Posted: 11/11/2020 09:43:46

This is also an enjoyable photo. The roadway going from the lower left into the image to the mid=right gives some depth and leads the eye to the domed building. Sitting here in a blistery cold day this photo makes me want to be there.   Posted: 11/12/2020 10:16:49

Great colors, composition, and light. It really makes me want to go there. The angle of the shot adds a lot to making it work well, where were you on when you took the shot. Compared to the great color of the buildings the sky looks a little flat. I would try enhancing the blues a bit.   Posted: 11/23/2020 11:05:55

Thank you for very nice comments and feedback. I was on the upper deck of the cruse ship and shot the image from high angle.   Posted: 11/30/2020 14:15:14

I'm always amazed how each of the Greek islands seems to have its own character. I've only been to Santorini, but there the main feature is the blue domes and whitewashed buildings. Here in Symi there is not a single blue dome, and the buildings are a natural sand color. I especially like the zigzag lines of the harbor, the road, and the white wall separating the upper city from the middle area.   Posted: 11/23/2020 20:36:44
