Cucumber Falls by Eric Schweitzer

September 2020 - Cucumber Falls

About the Image(s)

Last week my wife and I spent a week in Western PA hiking and dodging rain drops. This fall is in Ohiopyle State Park, which has quit a few falls. I have been practicing taking photos of falls to become familiar with the technique. It was shot at 1/5@f14, 24mm, ISO 1600 using a polarizing filter. In post I cropped, adjusted white balance, made basic tonal adjustments, and sharpened. Then I applied a Lightroom color preset. I was hoping for water to be a little more silky, but this is as close as I could get. Is this because of the low water flow. Any ideas.

This is a very good waterfall image. The DOF, colors, and composition are excellent. The lighting/shadows shows whats behind the waterfall. The water looks fluid. Great job.   Posted: 09/14/2020 09:44:36

Wow! In my opinion this is a winner. I can't see or think of anything you could do to enhance this. Everything is balanced, the water fall is a little off center as it should be, and the stick at the bottom leads the eye to the falls. Very enjoyable image, thanks.   Posted: 09/16/2020 14:09:50

I think it's quite silky as it is, but one thing you could try would be using a smaller aperture to get a longer exposure.   Posted: 09/16/2020 15:39:00

The waterfall passed just gorgeous. The silk effect on the waterfall is very pleasant. The colors are very vivid. It is sharp too. Nice work.   Posted: 09/19/2020 22:50:51

Nice capture in my opinion. Assuming your camera was on a tripod, maybe experiment with different shutter speeds to get various silky water looks. A ND filter can be added so that a lower iso can be used while still having slower shutter speeds. Try shooting at 100-400 iso and 1/4-1/2 sec (a 6 or 10 stop ND filter may have to be used).   Posted: 09/22/2020 15:55:59

Great capture with a warm nature scene. I enjoy the overall feel and can almost hear the water. Thanks for sharing.   Posted: 09/22/2020 21:14:26
