Camels with their Drivers by Eric Schweitzer

May 2020 - Camels with their Drivers

About the Image(s)

These camels are part of the camel ride we took last October in Morocco. I liked the colors of the driver’s outfits and the blankets used for our seating comfort as contrasted to the brown colors of the desert. If I were to enter this in a competition, I would probably replace the sky with one that has a few clouds in it. Shot at 1/640 sec @ f8.0, 37 mm on a 24-105 zoom lens, and ISO 160. In post processing I made my usual adjustments and sharpened.

I've served as a competition photo judge for several international contests and photos of camels on the desert generally do well. I really enjoyed seeing this.

The shadows and colors really contribute to this image.

While I like the pano format,I do wish you had left just a tiny bit more sky at the top. As it is,it just feels a bit cramped.   Posted: 05/08/2020 16:28:04

Larry, thanks for your comment. Interestingly, I submitted this image to my camera club's competition and the judge had the same comment. It is a delicate balance between enough sky and too little or too much. I did not think replacing the sky with one with clouds would appropriate for a desert image.   Posted: 05/22/2020 11:15:40

Again speaking as a judge, if you have either more sky, or sky with clouds it will take attention away from the color and the camels. I feel to improve it you should have moved about 6-7 steps to the right from that angle you would have been able to capture all the faces (humans and camels, plus you would have been able to pin the entire group against the sand dune and eliminate the entire sky. You made a great choice by shooting at such a low angle. If anything, you could have gotten lower, that would make the foreground camel seem more powerful and dominate.

I still love the photo   Posted: 05/24/2020 08:30:30

I really like the colorful blankets and robes against the desert sand. I too would like just a bit more sky, although I can see that the stark blue barrenness of the sky might not add much in itself - just give a little extra breathing room above the heads.   Posted: 05/15/2020 16:24:11

Pano was a good choice for this image. Good shadows, colors and sharpness. However, maybe more sky would have given it more feeling of the vast space.   Posted: 05/18/2020 10:36:37

What an impressive image! The color contrast is fabulous. Composition, technique and interest are all there. Nice balance and very sharp. Good shot!   Posted: 05/18/2020 23:30:08

I like the colors in this photo. I had the thought that instead of replacing the sky, what if you added height to the dunes and eliminated the sky altogether.   Posted: 05/22/2020 09:41:40
