How'd They Do That? by Audrey Waitkus

September 2019 - How'd They Do That?

About the Image(s)

Sunsets in Door County are often quite wonderful, but this one is a puzzler as well. The colors are just as we saw them. Other photographers have the same results. The best we can figure is that there is a cloud with a sharp edge which the sun is peeking around on the left third of the photo casting the yellow light. In any case, the iPhone settings were ISO 32, f/2.2, 1/40 sec. The time was five minutes after the actual sunset. I really love the colors so when I took it into Photoshop I simply straightened the horizon,
cropped, and cloned out a couple of distracting elements. The only other treatment was my usual output local contrast enhancement. If anyone has more astronomy insights, I'd love the explore the phenomenon.

I think it's a beautiful photo. you did a great job capturing the serenity of the place as well as drama--especially of the sky. I like the FG tree in RHS that is just enough to give it some depth. However, to my eye, a bit more crop the portion of that tree on RHS might increase the appeal.   Posted: 09/19/2019 13:48:48

I agree. As soon as I read your comment, I saw how taking it in just to where the tree trunk meets the ground would greatly improve the focus on the main topic. Thanks for your comment.   Posted: 09/19/2019 20:37:22

This one belongs enlarged, on the wall! I take a lot of sunset images; this one is striking. Colors and composition are just right.   Posted: 09/20/2019 09:06:29

Wonder full light, color and composition. I do not know what is causing the color change in the reflections, but you might be on the right track that the clouds are the cause. If you follow the darker area up into the clouds, the clouds below the lighter break are a little darker.

I agree with Abe that some cropping would help make it pop, but would go further. I cropped it as shown in the thumbnail. See if you like it.   Posted: 09/24/2019 09:19:40

Interesting photo. I like Eric's crop because it takes away some of the super bright sky that keeps drawing my eye.   Posted: 09/24/2019 15:11:33
