Coleus Mainstreet Sunset Boulevard™ by Audrey Waitkus

October 2018 - Coleus Mainstreet Sunset Boulevard™

About the Image(s)

This coleus was in a pot outside a restaurant in Door County. I used my iPhone camera which recorded settings of f/2.2, ISO 25, 1/60 sec. I took it into Photoshop and cloned out some bright areas and cloned in a missing leaf edge, adjusted local contrast, and saved for web.

I was pretty sure it was a coleus, but wanted to see if I could find the specific variety since it wasn't one I'd seen. I found it on the White Flower Farm website and it turned out to be Coleus Mainstreet Sunset Boulevard described as having "shades of salmon pink, dark copper, and olive" to which I might add that the undersides of the leaves are a striking purple.

I thought about cropping up from the bottom just to the tip of the lowest full leaf, but I also liked having a bit of the tub it was planted in.

Door County 'shines' again ! Very nice capture of these beautiful red leaves and I agree that the tub adds a bit !   Posted: 10/13/2018 12:37:01

Nice. I like the color and textures in this. There is nothing I would change.   Posted: 10/16/2018 11:03:04

Beautiful! The colors, sharpness and composition are very good. You get some really nice images with your phone camera. I think I'll try to find that plant...colceus are easy to grow so I should not have a problem adding it to my yard.   Posted: 10/20/2018 16:21:26

A great subject and well composed with beautiful colors. The lighting is bit different, darker in the middle, but works well for this image. The only change I would suggest is to make it a bit wider so the tips of top leaves are away from the edge.   Posted: 10/23/2018 09:47:19

You captured the color and detail of the coleus well. The subtle edits that you did make enhanced the appearance. I'm not sure I would do anything different.   Posted: 10/25/2018 21:35:32

Love all the leading lines and color.   Posted: 10/28/2018 00:15:20

Same here - I wouldn't change a thing! Of course, the colors are great, but you also did a fantastic job with composition. IMO< the choice to include a bit of the pot helps the image...adds just a hint of interest and placement. It also helps to keep the center of the leaf cluster at the 1/3 location from the top. Nice image, Audrey!   Posted: 10/28/2018 20:31:34
