Pumpkin Painting by Marla Henry

October 2018 - Pumpkin Painting

About the Image(s)

Our church holds a harvest celebration each year at a member's farm. This is one of the photos I took inside the barn during the event. This child was working very hard on her master piece. ISO 1000, 50mm, f1.8, 125 sec.

The expression on the child's face is priceless! Depth of field is strong, with the pumpkin soft and the child in focus. You might consider cloning out the bright white (pipe?) on the upper left side. This is one for the child's scrapbook....   Posted: 10/20/2018 15:44:18

Good point about the bright area. Thanks!   Posted: 10/20/2018 18:42:31

Hmmm! I posted a comment last week and now it's gone!! Hopefully I can recreate it. I really like the way you got soft focus on everything but the child's face and hair even to the finest hairs. And I especially like the way the lighting makes it look like an orange glow from inside the pumpkin is lighting up the child's face.   Posted: 10/21/2018 07:15:10

Thank you.   Posted: 10/23/2018 20:32:34

Great subject and composition. The lighting is a little confusing. The top and right of her head look like they are lit by a light in the upper right. However, her face has a shadow from her arm with the light source from the left, and the pumpkin has a shadow from a light source on the lower right. Not sure this is a problem, just odd. There is one adjustment I would try to make the next time you are shooting this type of image, move the camera a bit to the left and up so there is a little separation between the pumpkin and her face,   Posted: 10/23/2018 15:56:46

This was taken in a barn and there was light coming in from both sides through open barn doors. Good point about the separation. Thanks.   Posted: 10/23/2018 20:31:42

Love the scene. His expression shows a lot of concentration to me but could be interpreted differently to others. Not sure of any additional suggestions other than what has already been mentioned. Nice image.   Posted: 10/28/2018 00:45:37

Agree with the others that the expression is great. After that, I do feel a bit confused by the lighting as well. There isn't usually much you can do about that when grabbing a moment, of course. I also agree with Eric that moving slightly left....IMO, I would have liked to see this taken much more to the left so we can see closer to the end of the brush. The use of DoF with focus on the child is spot on. If you were able to share this with the parents, I'm sure they would love it!   Posted: 10/28/2018 20:37:03
