Colonial Market Re-enactor by Eric Schweitzer

June 2018 - Colonial Market Re-enactor

About the Image(s)

Last month I went to an annual Colonial Market at Ft. Frederick Maryland. This is a 4-day event with 500 to 600 re-enactors living in tents of colonial design and a complete village of shops with arts/crafts/food from colonial times. This image was shot with an 18-135 lens at 50mm, 1/640 at f11 and ISO of 200. Since I wanted just the re-enactor I cropped to eliminate most of the background and made white balance, tone, and clarity adjustments. I also brightened the eyes a bit and adjusted the luminance of the face.

I like the crop and the way the colors of the surroundings are positioned in just such a way as to help his clothing, face, and hat stand out against the background. My eye kept going to the bright spot of sky in the upper right. I took it into Photoshop and did a quick clone of some branches to bring that area into harmony with the rest of the background. I think it helps without really changing the story.   Posted: 06/19/2018 08:36:03

Thanks, I think it is a good improvement. My camera club has a faces competition in the fall and I plan to enter this image.   Posted: 06/19/2018 10:03:28

A great warm image! Color, sharpness and composition are very good. Audrey's change in the B/G adds to this portrait.   Posted: 06/20/2018 08:16:58

Agree with the others that the crop is good. You have captured a good connection with the subject too. IMO, the image is a little too orange/warm. I toned it down a bit in my VF as well as added some contract using the tone curve to give a bit more edginess, given the edginess of the subject.   Posted: 06/23/2018 20:09:06

I love his expression. Overall it's a good photo. Curious why such a small aperture on a portrait.   Posted: 06/25/2018 19:57:06
