About the Image(s)

While in Yellowstone NP this summer I drove the Grand Loop Rd from the Fishing Bridge Campground. The parking area at Gibbon Falls provided a great overview of the falls and the canyon created by the Gibbon River. The image was captured with my Nikon D7000 and Nikkor 18-200mm zoom at ISO 200, f16, and 18mm. The final image is a 3 shot HDR image (1/6,1/8,1/10 sec). The 3 images were merged using Aurora HDR 2017 and tweaked using one of the landscape presets.

I am headed to Yellowstone this summer so I am looking for ideas like this as photo ops. This will have to be on my list. I love the long exposure. I am not a fan of the overdone HDR (personal thing). I would just back off the processing to give a more natural look. However, if you like it, then enjoy it.   Posted: 01/10/2018 16:48:25

Thanks. This view is just past the parking lot for Gibbon Falls.   Posted: 01/10/2018 19:06:20

I agree with Marla that it seems a bit too sharpened and saturated. I think it might be an artifact of the HDR process, and maybe just dialing back the vibrance would make it look more natural to me (see thumbnail). At first I had a problem locating the run-out of the falls, till I realized there was so little water at this season that the almost black area with the prominent rocks was indeed the stream below the falls. I think this is another area where the over-saturation of the rocks plays a trick on my perception. Would love to see this one at full flood in the early spring.   Posted: 01/20/2018 08:03:14

Looks like a beautiful place. Its a bit strong on sharpness or vibrancy. Audrey toned it down and that seems more natural. Wish I could have been there to take a picture of it.   Posted: 01/23/2018 16:54:43

The photo has great color and composition. I think it is a victim of too much HDR. You do not say how many f-stops you used between shots. I have found that 2 f-stops is too much for my tastes and only use 1 f-stop, which I shot a lot. I wonder what it would look like as a single shot and darkening the land, or brightening the falls.   Posted: 01/23/2018 18:50:19

Thanks. It is one f-stop. I'll try the single image in the middle. In reality it probably didn't need to be HDR.   Posted: 01/23/2018 19:45:39

I find there are many times I do not HDR, but it is better to have it and delete the extra shots. It beats having to make another trip, if that is even possible.

Not to beat a dead horse...I agree with the others on the HDR aspect and do think Audrey's suggested edit helps the image. It was the first thing I noticed before reading the other reviews. Maybe the downed trees and canyon are playing tricks on my eyes, but is it level? It seem like the right side needs to come up just a tad. Beautiful location, though!   Posted: 01/26/2018 13:06:26
